Ingredients
  • 2 cups sunflower seeds, raw
  • 1 cup pine nuts
  • 1 cup pumpkin seeds, raw
  • 1 cup cranberries, dried and sweetened
  • 1 cup raisins

 

Instructions
  1. Measure all of the ingredients into a mixing bowl and stir with a wooden spoon until well combined.

  2. Transfer some to a festive bowl to serve as an appetizer. Makes 6 cups

Ingredients

  • 8 whole-wheat graham cracker squares, finely ground
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1/4 cup smooth natural peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons honey
  • 4 teaspoons unsweetened coconut

Preparation

  1. Combine ground whole-wheat graham crackers, raisins, peanut butter and honey in a small bowl. Pat into 8 cookies and press lightly in coconut.

Per serving: 313 calories; 13 g fat (2 g sat, 0 g mono); 0 mg cholesterol; 46 g carbohydrates; 7 g protein; 4 g fiber; 284 mg sodium; 82 mg potassium.

 Great Snack Ideas

Fresh fruit, canned light fruit, frozen fruit.

 

Peanut butter and whole wheat bread.

 

Fiber containing graola bars.

Hummus and pita bread or Triscuits.

 

Raw veggies. Have reduced fat salad dressing for a dip.

 

Whole wheat toast with low fat cottage cheese.

 

Yogurt-you can also add cereal such as Grape Nuts to it.

 

Low fat animal crackers withour icing or graham crackers, add a glass of 1% milk.

 

Light Microwave popcorn or mini rice cakes.

 

Mix together a dry cereal such as Wheat Chex, add nuts or sunflower seeds, dried fruit such as cranberries or raisins and mimi M & M's. Place in snack size baggies to keep portion conrol.

 

Sugar free fudgsicles or popsicles.

 

1% chocolate milk.

Make a sandwich wrap with wheat tortilla, low fat turkey or ham slices, bagged salad greens, cucumbers and light Italian dressing.

 

Fat free refried beans, reduced fat cheese, wheat tortillas, and salsa for a quick bean and cheese burrito.

You won't find this fruity impostor at a ball game or backyard barbecue, but it sure makes a doggone wholesome "fast food" breakfast.

Ingredients
  • Whole-grain hot dog bun
  • Peanut butter
  • Wheat germ or sunflower seeds
  • Banana
  • Jam

 

Instructions
  1. Simply spread a whole-grain hot dog bun with peanut butter, sprinkle with wheat germ or sunflower seeds, and top with a whole, peeled banana and a squiggle of jam. Add a side of milk to round out the meal. Variation: For a Banana Burrito, substitute a tortilla for the bun.
